The debut EP from Kryptos is something completely different to psychobilly, scratching an itch that’s been nagging you for who knows how long. With an undeniably unique sound that is as smooth as it is mental, this almost-perfect recording sets your speakers on fire.

I first heard these guys off the California Psychobilly compilation from Rockin’ Psycho Records, where they closed off the comp with a titanic six minute long track called “Between Here and There” (Lo-fi mono sample in Episode 74). This one stood out on the comp, primarily due to its length combined with its constant fresh and evolving sound. In a genre that’s rooted in punk and rockabilly, most songs feature a predictable formula and rarely exceed 3 min. Kryptos break this mold with some very out of the box influences that my tiny brain can’t even begin to identify.

There’s more to this band than the long songs, though, it’s primarily how different everything sounds. Their bassist is simultaneously clean and frantic with almost none of that slap-knocking sound (another surprisingly rare element in psychobilly). This was heavily exploited with some of the smoothest reverb’d guitars, creating a BIG, smooth and suave musical anomaly. It might just be because of how over-the-board this bass guy goes, but it also stands out even more when the second guitar gets in the mix. Even if you only heard their song “Hypocrisy” once, you’ll know that these guys are absolute creative geniuses (Low-fidelity monaural version heard in Episode 81).

While there’s the balls-mental psychobilly, the crystal-clean product, the unique edge and original style, this EP isn’t without its flaws. According to Kryptos’ band profile, they’re not just a psychobilly band. They categorize themselves as a “Psychobilly/Experimental/Progressive” band, and the progressive experiments are obvious in tracks four and five. If you’re a person who put on this EP for hearing some of THEE wildest rock and roll, then these are going to blindside you like they did me. These two tracks are slower and long-winded, creating a confusing vibe that could only be pulled off if it were trashy. Instead they sound too artistic, akin to what I imagine as Morissey is like. It’s a huge risk for a band to split their soon-to-be-branded sound on a debut release, especially within the niche genre of psychobilly. But are those two tracks bad? I honestly don’t know if it’s BAD music, I just know I skip them.

Even with the two weird tracks, this EP is still going to blast out your speakers and earbuds. The good stuff is absolutely WILD, while adding enough flair to stand out in a sometimes formulaic genre. Hopefully, Kryptos keep it wild with future releases. Get your hi-fidelity, stereophonic copy at Rockin Psycho Records. And to all you vinyl hounds, I feel your pain. While it’s definitely worth the few odd dollars, this is EP is for digital download only.
No surf, no garage punk, no sleazy RnB, just the sweet meats tonight! Tried not to do very much talking to squeeze in as much psychotic, hell-bent, mutant rockabilly as possible. On the week previous, on Jan 19th, there was an ice-storm in Washington state and good ole KGRG lost power. I learned that a lack of electricity makes radio shows much more difficult. To get back on schedule, we closed off this night’s show with the thirtieth episode of Gone Mental from the fine folks at Twin Cities Rockabilly. Also, my radio station boss told me I can’t say “THE ALL NUDE KGRG” anymore and I have to stick with the station’s official circle “R” tagline: “THE ALL NEW KGRG.” So… does it sound better when I wear pants? Leave a comment below if you like it naked.
Written in early January of 2011 and published in the extremely limited “Zorch Zine: Issue Three” (only 1,000 printed)
December 31st
The Sonics, The Dirty Birds and November Witch @ Capitol Theater

I kept bragging about my tickets to this show for weeks. I didn’t care who they were, I had to tell them. “I’M GOING TO SEE THE SONICS!” Some people were stoked, but most said something like “The basketball team?” Guess it doesn’t help to be in Seattle…

I knew it was going to be THEE show of a lifetime. And I was right.

An hour drive south to Washington’s state capitol of Olympia was surprisingly short. Not much (that I know of) happens down here outside of politics, so I rarely make the trek. The 86 year old Capitol Theater is primarily used for plays and film, but occasionally puts on concerts. An all ages area was on the main floor (with seats) and a 21+ balcony was up top with a miniature bar serving champagne and cider. The venue could accommodate around 750 patrons, but it was hard to tell with the mix of theater seating and standing. The crowd ranged from 16 year old kids to people in their 70’s, which was refreshing and also a great sign of the headliner’s legacy.

The first band was a group of young guys called The November Witch. They were a mixed sound of garage, grunge, punk rock, whatever, and their potty-mouth was not welcomed by some of the older audience members. Not many people were too impressed, but they were combating the initial socialization of a gig and all the latecomers.

After the kids climbed off stage to their girlfriends and parents, the next band grabbed the crowd as if they were kings of rock and roll. Blindsiding most everyone there, The Dirty Birds absolutely destroyed the place with a timelessly loud and honkin’ set. I’ve never heard such ageless, dynamic, true American rock from any other opening act at any show. These guys have GOT IT.

The front of the stage was getting more and more packed as most seated folk soon lost their visibility. A lady from a radio station came up for an introduction and we all heard the opening ***twingggg*** twang*** of “Cinderella.” The place bounced into life as people from all generations were grabbed by the primal pounding sound of The Sonics. Despite a likely lack of biological teeth, these guys delivered a spot-on set that wasn’t held back by their age. New guy Freddie Dennis powered through some the vocals, encapturing the young and feral attitude that put The Sonics on the map. While he seemed a bit off character from the rest of his bandmates, his sound glued him in right and proper. A midnight countdown in mid-set and a few encores later, the legends called it a night.

The house lights came on and I stood there, staring off in disbelief. Not only had I seen one of THEE most influential bands in punk rock, but they also played a freakishly tight set! It’s sad to say, but too many hall-of-famers ride their legacy without putting effort into their performances. I was half expecting to be disappointed, but they play for keeps! It was REAL! And it was RIGHT!

Lots to talk about here! Sorry for all the words, just click that link above and read while you listen. While I normally try to refrain to serious issues, this night, I mentioned briefly the heinous crap that went down with the old fogies and the Indonesian punks. And if any of you guys in Jakarta are reading this, my offer still stands; I’ll send you some stuff to really make piss ‘em off! We also talked about Graceland Five coming up in Episode 78 and promoted our Twitter contest for the Reverend Horton Heat/Supersuckers gig. And yes, those tickets were already given away, and, yes, you missed out. Maybe you should listen to the live show once in a while…

That night, we also plugged the successful Jan 16th gig at The Crocodile Cafe that is pictured above. Dragstrip Riot opened, and since it had been a while since they’d played a home show, there seemed to be a pretty good turnout. Three Bad Jacks tore it up with a rare lineup featuring rockabilly veterans John Palmer on drums and Dave Eckles on bass. I’d seen them a fair number of times, but this set was completely different. No fire, no gimmicks, just straight up solid rock and roll. Really enjoyed it! The girls came up next, which most people were there for, hosted by the mad skills of Vincent Drambuie. It’s difficult to describe burlesque with words and about as effective as pretending to eat, so I’ll just let this video of Aly Hellcat’s routine from the evening do the talking. This video was done up by Rob, the camera-king at RJB Photography.

But wait! This isn’t the Review Page of the website, this is Episode 77 that we’re talking about! Getting back on track, we had a concert calendar from Kjersti and closed the show with an airing of Gone Mental from Dan at Twin Cities Rockabilly.
Written October 11th, 2008 as a post on www.wreckingpit.com
I’m visiting my sister down in Southern California for the weekend… and I thought I’d give it a shot and hit up a show while I was down here. Turns out I found this flier:

Friday October 10th
Vaughn High School Presents:
The Curs www.myspace.com/thecurs
Dr. Bizarro’s Victims www.myspace.com/drbizarrosvictims
The Pea Brains www.myspace.com/thepeabrains
The Riff Raffs www.myspace.com/theriffraffsband
6 Sick 6 www.myspace.com/brutalpsychobilly
The Grims www.myspace.com/thegrims666

I was mildly familiar with The Curs, but I liked them enough to sit through some (what I expected to be) watered down horrorpunk w/ metal.

The flier also said that it was a fundraiser and that there was strict security w/ absolutely no drugs or alcohol. Seeing that the show was at a High School, that was understandable.

Turns out it was a backyard show at some guy’s house next to the school, and a little bit more my style.

Throughout the evening, I met some people and made some freinds. I introduced myself as “Jacob” and a good number of people seemed disappointed by my name. These people had names like Lobo, Slink, Hoser and Droopie.

The first band I heard was 6 Sick 6 (I missed The Grims). They sounded like grindcore with an upright. Wasn’t surprised at all.

The Riff Raffs came up next, all dressed in baseball uniforms and face paint, not like DAG paint though, we’re talking about The Furies from the 1979 film “The Warriors.” The Riff Raffs blew me away! They were chill, had an old school style, good sense of build up, solid musicians, and did a cover of Batmobile’s “Kiss Me Now.”

After their set I was talking to a guy Robert and his girlfriend about the next band, The Pea Brains. He told me they were more on the “Neo-rockabilly side of things, like The Sharks or Restless.” His girlfriend chimes in with “I think they sound like Rezurex.”

The Pea Brains played an enjoyable set, in my opinion, people kept heckling them though, since they “weren’t playing fast enough.” They guitarist played like he really had his country roots down with a splash of garage.

Dr. Bizarro’s Victims was the hyped band for the evening that everybody seemed to be talking about. Apparently, they are putting out a Christmas song with the Tabaltix and LGL on some upcoming comp? But their set was short and wild.

In California, when a highly anticipated, engertic psychobilly band gets on stage, people start … circle pitting? But a circle pit turn into a wrecking pit pretty quickly when there’s somebody going the opposite direction. And yeah, I saw that machine-gun gut-punching thing happen, too… it was weird.

The Curs lived up to my expectations, minus a lack of vocals from a DIY sound system. They played a really tight set with a good amount of musical diversity. But what was great was that everybody there was having fun time.

But overall, I was surprised by the old-school sound of the majority of the bands that played. I was expecting people to be a lot less friendly and a lot more focused on image. I also realised that people “dress up” more in seattle for a psychobilly show than down here. There was a very chill, genuine and accepting atmosphere which did not include any form of arrogance or shallowness. And despite all the shit that gets thrown at Southern California and its “scene,” not everybody is in it for the fashion.

Friday, January 13th, about 200 people packed into the The Funhouse, all for their own reasons. Some were there just cuz its their regular watering hole, others were followers of some of the bands, and a fair number came to support the Letha Melchior benefit fund. Letha is the wife of musician Dan Melchior, and she has recently been fighting cancer. You can read more information on their story as well as make contributions by checking out their Blogspot or this forum thread.

While initially unaware of the benefit, I had heard that Thee Cormans, a killer surf/trash/fuzz band, would be headlining the event. If there is one thing I have picked up on over the years, it’s that too many surf bands only tour once. Some of the best gigs I’ve been to have been reverb-soaked, splash-tastic, instro-fests. But, for some reason, the general public can’t listen to rock music without lyrics. This can be difficult for underground instrumental bands, as poor attendance for this vein of music is too common. Knowing this may be my only chance to catch the killer SoCal act, I made sure to block this weekend out for the band and jump in promotion with Episode 79 of Zorch Radio. Also on the bill for the night was a dynamic line-up featuring Telemesser, Le Sang Song and Broomsticks.

The Funhouse is THEE best bar/venue in the Seattle area. They have almost nightly shows, daily specials, strong drinks, and some very well kept pinball machines. The Funhouse always has a comfortable atmosphere, which is a nice break from some of the snootier bars that plague the Pacific Northwest. Plus they’ve got a partially covered outdoor area for people who want to step out for some air without losing their drinks.

Telemesser, the first band, had a heavy synth focus. I have no idea what kind of music this was, but the closest I can think of is something along the lines of The Faint. My friend said it reminded him of a loud and dark Joy Division, but we were probably both pretty wrong. An acoustic set from Le Sang Song and a loud rock/punk set from Broomsticks came next, but I had my head buried in Steve Ritchie’s Spiderman. I was really looking forward to playing that machine.

Thee Cormans closed the night with some goofy masks, fuzzed out surf rock, and a male go-go dancer. While the band does have a large amount of novelty, they still deliver an awesomely wild set equipped with buckets of reverb and perfect basslines. One of the gimmicks to the band is to insult the crowd, so in the true style of Thee Cormans, these are the ‘highlights” of their set:

1)	Great music for doing gay homo sex shit
2)	I found a free game on the pinball machine
3)	They had their music for sale on the vinyls for, like, the old skool record players, ya know
4)	The music makes for some epic poops in the bar’s bathroom
5)	I saw a woman cry during their set
6)	Except for the last few covers in their encore, they don’t sing.
7)	They are fat.

Despite the gay homo sex shit, it was a great time and exactly what I was looking for in a Friday night gig. I had seen them the previous night in Tacoma, and, while they were without the go-go dancing tadpole-man, they did manage to coerce a man in a wheelchair to dance around the crowd with his pants off, ding-a-ling-a’janglin’. I have to say I prefer the PG version with the tadpole.

Don’t miss these guys if they stop by your town, because it might be hard to find their LP “Halloween Songs with Sound Effects,” or their preceding 7 inch records. Locally, I got the LP at Radar Hair and Records and Records in SoDo and their “Emergency” 7” at Singles Going Steady in Belltown, but you can also find some releases online at In The Red.com or check out their site at theecormans.blogspot.com.

Jacob the Pope steps aside from the turntables this evening to have DJ Astro138 (Jesse) and DJ Zorch (Jorge) take over the music for the evening. We recently exhumed DJ Zorch’s debut in Episode 13, but he returns with another fatty stack o’ wax and a fellow record hound as well. They’ve got some wild 45′s ranging from Exotica to RnB, Instros to 60′s garage proto-punk.

Both Jesse and Jorge are setting up a KILLER gig called The Moldie Oldies Party to be hosted at Mr T’s Bowl in SoCal’s Highland Park. Not only are two record-nerds going to be spinning full sets, but they are accepting challengers from the public. Think you got some rekkids that can stand up to theirs? It’s only five bucks, but if you bring a box of records, then it’s less than the price of hot lunch, bus fare, or yer decaf-mocha-chino-acciatto.

This episode I got to ask DJ Astro138 and DJ Zorch all about their records, the stories behind them, and their inspiration for the gig. If you’ve never heard of Mad Mike Metrovich then this episode is for you!

Throughout the show, we mentioned a Vinyl Record Association on the facebook, and a sleazy RnB session back in Episode 58 with DJ Hobo Stab. I said I’d put up links for them on the blog post. So. There they are. Click them.
Digging WAAAAAY back into the archives here! Since we recently brought Jorge/DJ Zorch in Episode 80, I figured it’d be appropriate to exhume this monster. This is only episode 13 and things were a lot different then; had two other folks hosting the show as well, we were on a shorter/different time slot, we didn’t play any wax live, and the absolute dirtiest secret of them all… one of the host’s playlists was just audio ripped from Youtube. Yeah. I know. I just barfed too…

Since the music is being picked by four different people, the sound and playlist is all over the board. There’s modern surf, 50′s rockabilly, 80′s hardcore, psychobilly, and that’s all before the guest DJ set! Currently, DJ Zorch is a board member of the Vinyl Record Association and, alongside of fellow DJ Astro138, is establishing a Moldie Oldies Party in homage of Mad Mike Metrovitch. If you live in SoCal, don’t miss it!

On a personal level, it was a lot of fun re-visiting this episode as Jorge is responsible for introducing me to a huge array of sounds. 60′s garage punk, rock and roll saxaphones, exotica, Mad Mike’s, etc. Plus he’s responsible for feeding me the idea of spinning wax at gigs. Maybe you’ll get an itch for these sounds after hearing his set, too…
Busy night! Valentin of Rockin Psycho Records called in to talk about his California Psychobilly compilation and future releases under the new label. Plus, I found a few “Adult Themed” records on a recent hunt, and had to play em all together. In this episode of Zorch Radio, we spun some African beasts off Nosmoke’s extra-primitive “Zulu Stomp!! South Africa Garage Beats!!” and a new (to me) 7″ from Thee Cormans. Thee Cormans will be at the Seattle Funhouse on January 13th. We ended the night with a re-broadcasting of RadiOblivion, one of my favoriotes, Ep 65: Troglydite Dynamite.
